This Valentine’s Day, you could go the traditional route. You could bake a heart-shaped cake, make heart-shaped cookies or decorate frosting with heart-shaped candies. Heart-shaped cinnamon rolls are a whole new way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. These rolls taste delicious when made from scratch, but if you’re short on time, you can also make them with the cinnamon roll dough that you buy at the store (add additional fillings and toppings if you want). And of course, you don’t need to have them just on Valentine’s Day either. Serve them on birthdays, other holidays or really any day when you want to surprise your family with a sweet expression of love.

If you’re thinking your kids get up way too early to surprise them with a Valentine’s Day breakfast, no need to worry—instead, enlist your little ones in helping you make them. They can help unroll the dough and shape it into a heart. You can also task them with picking out special fillings and toppings for the cinnamon rolls. Since the rolls are separated from each other before being shaped for baking, each kid can take ownership of a roll and pick out special additions for it. Then they can put in the fillings before baking and sprinkle on the toppings when the rolls are done.

If you’re ready to give heart-shaped cinnamon rolls a try, follow these instructions and enjoy.

Heart-Shaped Cinnamon Rolls

Directions:

1.
Preheat the oven according to package directions.
2.
Open can and roll out dough on a silicone baking mat.
3.
Combine brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
4.
Melt butter and spread over dough. Sprinkle cinnamon-sugar mixture over butter. Sprinkle optional fillings if using. Press down gently to ensure they stick.
5.
Starting on the longside, carefully roll the dough halfway, and repeat from the other side so the two rolls are touching in the middle.
6.
Cut dough crosswise into about 16 equal slices. You may need to pinch the end and shape slightly to get the “heart” shape.
7.
Bake according to package directions.
8.
Cool for about 5 minutes, then spread icing over the rolls using a silicone spatula and sprinkle on optional toppings. Serve warm.
