Cookies For Kids Cancer
Cookies for Kids' Cancer was founded by two OXOnians, Gretchen and Larry Witt, who were inspired by their son Liam's battle with cancer. They were shocked to learn that childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease of kids in the US. The reason: lack of funding for new, improved, and less toxic therapies for cancers specific to children. The Witts knew they had to do something to make a difference for the more than 40,000 children in the US battling cancer each day.
For two longtime OXOnians, it only seemed natural that their call-to-action was kitchen-related. In 2007, Gretchen had an idea that sounded so crazy it just might work - to hold a larger-than-life cookie sale to help fund a promising new therapy for childhood cancer. Over the course of three weeks, Gretchen gathered over 250 volunteers (many of them fellow OXOnians) to bake and sell 96,000 cookies. The crazy idea worked, raising over $400,000 for research.
Gretchen and Larry realized they were on to something big. Nine months later, on Childhood Cancer Awareness Day in 2008, they launched Cookies for Kids’ Cancer as a national non-profit organization inspiring grassroots bake sales and other events year-round. The organization inspires others to join in the fight against pediatric cancer by raising the funds for new, improved and less toxic treatments. Since then, Cookies has granted more than $7 million, funding six dozen research projects, including 26 that are now available treatments, and has inspired nearly 7,000 events in all 50 states and 16 countries.
Through the years, OXOnians have devoted their personal time, energy and money to support this worthy cause, but the company wanted to play even a larger role in the movement to find a cure for pediatric cancer. That’s why, in 2011, OXO formalized its partnership with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, pledging to donate up to $100,000 per year to this very worthy cause.
Progress has been made, but we aren’t there yet. Read on to learn what OXO does to support Cookies for Kids’ Cancer and learn how you can help bake a difference and join us in the movement to find a cure for pediatric cancer.
Each fall, OXO dedicates a portion of the proceeds of specially marked baking products to benefit Cookies for Kids’ Cancer as part of our $100,000 commitment.
