Rinse and dry salad greens quickly and easily
Before the introduction of the OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner in 1998, crank or pull-tab salad spinners were considered high-end products. Some people even used the spin cycle of their washing machine to dry lettuce. Our easy-to-use Spinner turned the tool into an everyday kitchen essential.
At OXO, one of our core tenets is to identify and solve consumer pet peeves in order to make everyday living easier, and there was no shortage of user challenges when it came to old-fashioned salad spinners. They were difficult to start, as pull-string and crank-style spinners required fine motor skills and strength to begin the spinning motion. Some Spinners did not achieve high enough levels of RPM, leaving users with damp lettuce that had to be "towel-dried" before serving. They were cumbersome to operate -- some would spin out of control on countertops unless one hand held it down tightly while the other pulled or cranked. And they were tough to clean; it was not uncommon for lettuce to get caught in the lid.
The model for our Salad Spinner was found in an unlikely place -- a toy chest. Our Salad Spinner was inspired by a children's top, illustrating how even the most basic products can influence design innovation.
During user research, the development team learned that people inherently enjoy the action of pressing down on a button; not only is it fun and easy to do, but it gives a sense of satisfaction that something is working. Then there was the issue of soggy lettuce. Early in the development process, a designer actually calculated the surface tension of water droplets on lettuce so he could determine the precise level of centrifugal force required dislodge the water and dry the lettuce without damaging it. However, the centrifugal force required to dry lettuce without bruising it was so high that the Spinner had a tendency to walk or wobble all over the countertop -- this required the use of both hands (one to pump and the other to hold the Spinner steady), which wasn't an optimal user experience. Finally, our first attempt at a take-apart lid included pull tabs that held the lid securely together, but required too much force to separate the pieces.
Several iterations later, an iconic OXO product that makes everyday living easier was born.
The pump-style design makes it easy for people of all ages and abilities to use without the need for significant hand strength or fine motor skills.
Continuous turning in the same direction allows the Spinner basket to achieve higher RPM, resulting in the driest, crispest lettuce possible.
A combination of a non-slip ring bonded to the bottom of the bowl and the downward force from the pump keep the Spinner steady on the table, allowing for one-handed operation.
The clear lid immediately signals whether there is leftover lettuce caught inside and comes apart with a simple pull to wash thoroughly.
Dry salad greens with a simple press of the soft, non-slip knob. The non-slip base keeps the bowl steady on the countertop and the built-in brake button stops the Salad Spinner for unloading. The basket doubles as a colander, and the lid comes apart for easy cleaning.
